If you register for all three races by the time registration closes for the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon (or Half Marathon) and the LewisGale Salem Half Marathon and by October 11 for Star City, you will automatically be registered to receive the Virginia's Blue Ridge Triple Crown medal. Medals will be distributed at the awards ceremony for the Star City Half Marathon on November 21.
Virginia's Blue Ridge Triple Crown Rules and Regulations:
ABOUT THE 2020 MEDAL:
The railroad first came to Virginia's Blue Ridge in 1852 in what was then known as "Big Lick." In 1882, Roanoke became a crossroads for the railroad, which eventually became the Norfolk and Western Railway. This marked the start of the town's rapid growth, leading to its charter as the City of Roanoke in 1884. Norfolk and Western was headquartered in Roanoke until 1982 when it merged with Southern Railway and the headquarters shifted to Norfolk. From 1950-1959 Norfolk and Western manufactured the 611 class "J" steam locomotive in the Roanoke shops, which has become an icon of the region.
The 2020 Triple Crown medal is a massive 5" square and features a 3-D sculpted 611 steam engine with a clear jewel in the place of the headlight of the locomotive. The three race names are listed on the medal below the engine, with a stacked "2020" in the lower right corner. The beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains create a scenic backdrop for the historic locomotive.
